Acupressure can Enhance Comfort and Performance
for Musicians and Artists
Being a musician and artist myself, I am aware of some of the physical and emotional stresses that practice and performance can
cause and have found that acupressure can relieve some of these. I play the cello and find my right shoulder and forearm get stiff and tense from the weight of the bow after long periods of practising, especially when preparing for an upcoming performance. Doing some warm-up exercises, taking some deep breaths, taking a break after 25 minutes and holding some acu-points on myself help to relieve the tight, fatigued muscles. Holding the acu-points encourages the energy or chi to flow freely and allows me to continue to practise with greater ease and mental clarity.
One of my acupressure clients is a violist who sits next to me in the orchestra. One time when she was experiencing arm and shoulder pain after a 3 day rehearsal, she came for an acupressure treatment. The benefits were noticeable almost immediately ... her shoulder pain was gone after the session.
On another occasion she had been in a car accident and did some soft tissue damage to her wrist. A few minutes of acupressure on her wrist enabled her to continue to rehearse that night.Holding acupressure points can not only alleviate ailments such as tight, tired muscles, eye strain, headaches and migraine pain, and muscle cramps, but can also improve mental clarity and increase energy before performance.
Regardless of the instrument played, similar and some unique physical and emotional issues can occur.A series of acupressure sessions can help keep you in top form for great performances!
Enhancing Healing and Comfort for Athletes and Dancers
Whether you are an athlete or a dancer you may have experienced some of the most common injuries such as muscle strain, shin splints, achilles tendonitis, patella(kneecap) strains, knee or ankle sprains or simply sore muscles. Sometimes we need to be reminded that pain is a message from our bodies trying to get our attention. Pushing through pain can sometimes make the problem worse, so resting and/or seeing a health practitioner can be a wise choice. One health modality that can benefit an athlete's or a dancer's performance by treating their discomfort and pain is Jin Shin Do Acupressure.
There are specific Acupressure points and point combinations that treat a wide variety of conditions and situations.Acupressure points can be helpful to:
- increase energy reserves before an event
- relieve muscle tension and fatigue
- relieve soreness anywhere in the body
- benefit the hip, knee and ankle joints
- calm the mind and emotions
- help with clear thinking
- relieve headaches and migraines
- help with insomnia
- increase awareness of body/mind
One client recently had a biking accident and had undergone knee surgery. Her knee was stiff and swollen and she walked with a limp. She found that after an acupressure treatment there was reduced swelling and stiffness and she walked with greater ease. She intends to continue her treatments every two weeks until the healing is noticeably improved.
Acupressure lessens pain by encouraging the production of endorphins and moves energy to improve circulation. This in turn enhances healing, flexibility and often a feeling of well-being. Your body/mind would probably benefit from the nourishing touch of an acupressure treatment.
